Although Gladys did not want to go, her friend insisted. Some years after graduation, one of Gladys’ friends invited her to a House Party put on by the Methodist Church Singles' Club. Gladys graduated high school with the class of 1931. Meanwhile, she attended Union High School, where she applied herself to her studies and became a member of the National Honor Society. Gladys voluntarily took on new responsibilities around the house, doing anything she could to help support her family. Her father, Leonard Bolier, died of Tuberculosis. Gladys performed in many recitals, dancing to the pieces of music her mother would play.Īt the age of 16, Gladys and her entire family experienced a life changing event. When Anna May was asked to play the piano for the local dance school, she accepted the position in exchange for her daughter’s enrollment in classes. She served as the organist and choir director of her church as well. Even so, Anna May earned additional money by teaching piano lessons. Sometime later, young Gladys was joined by a baby brother, Leonard.Īs a jeweler at DeVries Jewelry Store on the west side of Grand Rapids, Leonard made a comfortable living for his family. This was the hometown of a couple named Leonard and Anna May (Winn) Bolier, who, ironically enough, welcomed their first child at Butterworth Hospital on July 4, 1915, as the entire country celebrated patriotism, unity, and independence. She and her husband moved in 2007 to Cleveland, where they became active members of the First United Methodist Church. She was employed as a secretary with Memphis City Schools for over 30 years. She married Bobby Joe Blankenship in 1949 in Humboldt, TN, and they moved to Memphis, TN, in 1956. Gladys was born in Gibson, TN, to John Thomas Fiser III and Gracie Elizabeth Yochum Fiser. Gladys Fiser Blankenship, 93, of Cleveland, TN, passed away Friday, July 29, 2022, at her home surrounded by her family.
